Cabrillo Unified School District recognizes and appreciates volunteer assistance in schools. Volunteers can significantly enrich the educational program and strengthen a school’s relationship with the community. The District encourages parents/guardians and other members of the community to share their time, knowledge, and abilities with students. The Board, in compliance with California Education Code 35021 and Board Policy 1240, requires school volunteers to be screened and authorized to volunteer. Additionally, California Assembly Bill (AB) 506, amended in 2021, requires volunteers to complete child abuse and neglect reporter training. The training requirement may be met by completing the online mandated reporter training provided by the Office of Child Abuse Prevention in the State Department of Social Services.
A volunteer is a parent, community member, or another adult who assists at a school site or program on a regular or semi-regular basis before, during, or after school hours. There are two types of volunteers:
Tier I Volunteers (non-student contact and/or supervised volunteer)
Examples: front office/copy volunteers, committee volunteers, and volunteers that work under the direct supervision of District Staff.
Please make sure you have the following documents prior to completing the application:
- Copy of Identification
- Certificate of completion for Mandated Reporter Training
Tier II Volunteers (student contact volunteer)
Examples: coach, tutor, classroom helper, library helper, book fairs, (i.e., field trip chaperone or overnight school-sponsored trips, driver of students).
Please make sure you have the following documents prior to completing the application:
- Copy of Identification
- Certificate of completion of Mandated Reporter Training
- TB test result or certificate. Your TB clearance is good for 4 years from the date of your TB test result or certificate. Please refer to the TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire
- Live Scan Fingerprint Clearance. Tier II Volunteers will need to obtain Live Scan fingerprint clearance at any Live Scan approved location
To facilitate access to fingerprinting, encourage parent engagement and volunteerism, in alignment with the CUSD LCAP Priority 3 (Parental Involvement and Family Engagement), CUSD will cover the cost of individuals who are fingerprinted at a CUSD sponsored fingerprinting opportunity for the 2024-2025 school year.
There will be several fingerprinting dates throughout the district in an effort to streamline and simplify the process. Please contact your school site for dates and times.
