Half Moon Bay, Calif. (May 15, 2019)—The Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD) Governing Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Sean McPhetridge has been selected as the finalist for the  Superintendent position.  The Board will be requested to approve Dr. McPhetridge’s appointment at the May 16, 2019 Regular Board Meeting. He is scheduled to begin his position on July 15, 2019.

Input for the new superintendent included sessions with administrators and staff, a community open forum for parents and district stakeholders, and an online survey. The Board selected Dr. McPhetridge from an incredibly talented and impressive list of candidates.

To verify the Board’s selection, two Board members and CUSD stakeholder groups visited the Alameda Unified School District on May 10, 2019 to meet with Dr. McPhetridge and his colleagues.  After the verification visit, CUSD Board President Sophia Layne said, “Dr. McPhetridge is an experienced, collaborative school district leader who believes strongly in the importance of equity in education and has a proven track record of successfully engaging teachers, staff, and students.  He is a ‘servant leader’ who communicates effectively, drives transparent and robust decision-making, and mobilizes communities toward shared goals.  Dr. McPhetridge strives for a culture of inclusion and unity, and he shares our community’s values in believing every student can succeed if provided high levels of expectation and support.”

In these roles, Dr. McPhetridge built innovative Early College and Career/Technical Education programs, implemented targeted supports for English Learners, and expanded district-wide multi-lingual family engagement programs.  Among other achievements, he helped establish multi-tiered systems of support, social-emotional curricula, and restorative discipline practices for all students at AUSD schools.

Proficient in Spanish, Dr. McPhetridge’s nearly 30 years working in education include serving as an English and Spanish teacher and as a vice principal and principal in the K-12 setting, as well as serving as an ESL instructor and college coordinator at San Quentin State Prison.  His breadth and depth of experiences, exemplary leadership skills, and passion for preparing all students for success uniquely qualify him for the role of superintendent in CUSD.
