Proclamation

Declaring October as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer History Month


WHEREAS, members of the Cabrillo Unified School District Governing Board support the   rights, freedoms,  and equality of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer,   and  questioning (LGBTQ); and  

WHEREAS, all students deserve to feel safe and welcome in their schools, to be known by their preferred name, gender identity, story, as well as to see themselves represented in the curricula; and

 WHEREAS, the California Legislature adopted AB 677 (Chapter 744) (2017) encouraging schools to collect voluntary self-identification information on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE); and WHEREAS, on April 8, 2003, the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled, in a case brought by local, Santa Clara County students (Flores v. Morgan Hill Unified School District, 324 F.3d 1130 [9th Cir. 2003]), that school district staff were responsible for maintaining safe school environments and for equitable enforcement of nondiscrimination statutes and policies.
