WHEREAS, from the early settlers of the New World to those reaching for the American dream today, Hispanics have shaped and strengthened our country; and 

WHEREAS, the month of September 15 to October 15 was designated as Hispanic Heritage Month by the United States Congress in 1988; and 

WHEREAS, Hispanic, Latino, Latina, or Latinx individuals represent a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, including Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other cultures or origins regardless of race; and 

WHEREAS, September 15 was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) and September 16 for Mexico’s independence.
