Kings Mountain Elementary School is a small elementary school in the Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD). The school serves approximately 80 students, kindergarten through fifth grade, in three classrooms (K/1, 2/3, and 3/4/5).
The school’s small size and multi-grade classrooms provide a flexible and nurturing educational environment for its students. Kings Mountain School was awarded a Distinguished School Award from the State of California in 2008, and the school continues to be committed to academic excellence and good citizenship.
Curriculum Highlights:
- Houghton Mifflin Math and Every Day Math
- Every Child a Read and Writer (writer’s and reader’s workshops) with publication in the school newsletter
- Buddy reading programs
- Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), an online tool for objective, accurate screening and benchmarking reading comprehension
- Math Reasoning Inventory (MRI), and online tool for assessing students’ understanding of mathematics curriculum
- Dedicated science teacher offering a specialized, hands-on curriculum based upon Harcourt, Full Options Science System (FOSS) & Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) for grades 2/3/4/5
- FOSS science curriculum for K/1
- Computer technology lab time for all students
- Weekly music classes, with semi-annual, school-wide performances in an off-campus venue
- Weekly Art In Action classes, taught by trained parent volunteers, with art exhibits to display student work, for all grades
- School-wide Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program
- Dedicated, district-appointed Physical Education instructor for grades 4/5
- Non-competitive, skills-based Physical Education program for K/1/2/3

Kings Mountain Children’s Center (KMCC)
The school’s after school program is called the Kings Mountain Children’s Center (KMCC). KMCC operates on school days from school release until 6:00 P.M. KMCC is under the jurisdiction of CUSD and KMCC staff members are District employees. Kings Mountain Associated Parents provides a parent committee to give input and support to the program staff. KMCC offers Homework Club four days per week, as well as other organized programs, including art classes, gardening, and more, at no additional cost to families. These extra programs are operated on an opt-in basis, and are balanced out by plenty of time for free play.
