Hey Cougars! Are there any girls out there interested in playing football!?! Any guys interested in cheerleading? If so, you're in luck!!!

The leadership class is putting on a powder puff game where girls play football and the guy football players will be our cheerleaders. The powder puff game will be played immediately after school on Friday, February 26th!

There will be two mandatory one hour practices held on Monday, February 22nd, and Wednesday, February 24th, from 3-4 pm! You must attend BOTH practices before you sign up! 11 girls from each grade and 7 football players from each grade will be able to play. First come, first serve! Congratulations to the Wrestling team for their 42 to 30 win over Terra Nova. 

The win puts them 2nd in the league with a good shot at winning the PAL Tournament Championship, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Woodside High School.

This is a cell phone and electronics policy update and reminders. Please pay close attention because this will be effective immediately following this announcement. 

Half Moon Bay High School's Policy

o   Students may have electronic devices on campus but they should not interfere with classroom instruction.

o   All cell phones must be turned off and not visible during class time.  Phones and electronics can be used before and after school, at brunch and at lunch ONLY!  Cells phones are NOT to be used during passing periods or during any instructional time.  (Ex.  Cell phones and electronics are not to be used on a bathroom pass when class is in session.)

o   Electronic devices which may have the capability of taking pictures or visual or audio recordings may not be used for that purpose at school without written permission of the site administrator.

o   A cell phone may not be used as an instructional tool (i.e. calculator)

o   Students who do not comply with this policy are subject to discipline, including the confiscation of the device and/or withdrawal of permission to possess such a device at school.

 First Offence:  Teacher takes the phone/electronic device and brings it to the office.  Front office issues a detention and the student gets the phone returned after the detention for the phone is served (i.e. if the student has additional detentions, they must serve all outstanding detentions before the phone or electronic device will be returned).

Second Offence:  Teacher takes the phone/electronic device and brings it to the office.  Front office issues detention and the phone is not returned until the parent comes to pick it up.  (i.e. if the student has additional detentions, they must serve all outstanding detentions before the phone or electronic device will be returned).

Third Offence:  Teacher takes the phone/electronic device and brings it to the office.  Front office issues detentions and does not return the phone until after the student has attended Saturday School.  A meeting with the parents is scheduled, where the student is told the next phone infraction of any kind will result in a complete loss of phone privileges on campus.

Hockey news....
Congratulations to the Hockey team for their 8-0 win over Leigh High School! Every player on the team scored, with Scott Brovarney, Joe Wenzel, and Mac Johnston tallying one goal each. Austin Murison had 2 goals and Evan Farbstein had 3 goals. Goalie Tyler Olson made 5 saves in his first career shutout, and the Cougars generated 41 shots on goal. The hockey club team remains undefeated in regular-season play.

Good Morning Cougars!  Today at lunch is the second Cougar Award Luncheon of the year.  Teachers have selected students for character recognition. These award winners have exhibited commendable behavior, enhancing the overall quality of life at Half Moon Bay High School - either through outstanding personal progress or contributions to the classroom and/or campus experience.

Congratulations to the Cougars hockey team for beating Sobrato High 7 to 5 in their season opener. Goaltender TYLER OLSON made 19 saves, including a penalty shot attempt. EVAN FARBSTEIN had 2 goals, and JOE WENZELL, SCOTT BROVARNEY, DENNY PLANK, AUSTIN MURISON, and KYLE NELSON each had 1 goal. The undefeated hockey team plays again this Saturday, in San Jose.

Reminder to all Varsity and Frosh/Soph baseball players, there will be a baseball conditioning workout after school on Monday.

The workout will begin at 3:10 on the baseball field.

TALENT SHOW:  Good news Cougars, the talent show will go ahead as planned on Friday February 5th at 7:00pm!  We currently have 10 acts signed up.  If you are still interested in performing, we will let you sign up with Mr. Lawrence until the end of this week.  There will be a mandatory informational meeting next Tuesday at the beginning of lunch in Mr. Lawrence's room G-7.

RELAY AND QUIDDITCH:  Attention all varsity athletes and coaches.  At the assembly tomorrow we will need each of the winter sports to select 6 athletes to participate in the winter sports relay and 3 athletes to participate in the Harry Potter Quidditch tournament.  This includes wrestling, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys soccer, and Dance.  Good luck athletes!

Hey Cougars - Be enchanted on January 14th at the Winter wonderland formal.  This dance will be held at the IDES hall in Half Moon Bay.  Tickets go on sale Monday at lunch and the remainder of the week during brunch. $10 for singles, $15 for couples; $20 at the door.  This is semi-formal so put on your best dress!

The Winter Wonderland dance will crown a king and queen.  The students get to choose who the prince and princess are.  Nominee's can come from any grade, so vote for your king and queen when you purchase your tickets!!

To all future Varsity and Frosh/Soph baseball players, there will be a mandatory meeting taking place at lunch time on Wednesday. The meeting will be in the gym and should take about 15 minutes. All those who plan to play baseball this season need to attend.

1. -   This year's talent show is January 29, 2010. Sign-ups will be held in Mr. Lawrence's room this week, and the week we come back from break; the deadline is January 8th. Bands will not be permitted this year, as Battle of the Bands is its own event. Duets with instruments will be allowed.

1. -   The Harry Potter assembly will be held Friday, January 8th. New events include a best dressed/ cat-walk competition, a dance competition, a tricycle race between students and teachers, a winter sports relay, and a quittich tournament. Dress up for your class! Classes will be divided into four houses: freshman will be Ravenclaw,  sophomores will be Hufflepuff, Juniors will be Slytherin, and Seniors will be Gryffindore. However, to increase school spirit, the color of the house will be changed to the color of your class. See you then, Cougars!

Congratulations to our JV & Varsity Wrestling Teams!!! They competed against 36 other teams as HMBHS hosted the 43rd Peninsula Invitational. Our Varsity wrestlers took 2nd place at the tournament. Our JV wrestlers placed 7th. Great job wrestlers!

Let's congratulate our wonderful cross country teams for a job well done this season!

The varsity girls team won the Division IV CCS title.  Our girls ran a fantastic race this past Saturday. They outscored their closest competition by 20 points with all team members finishing in the top 40 out of 100 girls in the race. Each team member gave outstanding performances. Congratulations to:

Our boys finished 7th as a team. Mitch Martin finished 2nd overall, earning an individual berth to the CIF State championships in Fresno on Thanksgiving Weekend, to accompany the girls' team. Ryan Dill ran an outstanding race as well, finishing 11th, after being seeded 25th.  Although he did not qualify to advance on to the state meet, he did a fantastic job.  All members of the boys team were:

• The Student site council is looking for a freshman representative, so for those interested please see Karen Lee for an application.
• There is a blood drive coming up on the 24th through 1st and 6th period so remember if you are planning on participating please get your out of class approval sheets from the office and get them signed by your teachers. Remember you have to be at least 16 to participate and you will be out for 2 periods.
• Also on the 24th is the Ranch breakfast between 1st and 3rd period so come out and help support the FFA.
• And lastly the Assembly date has been scheduled for December 4th so get ready to show your spirit.

Congratulation to the Half Moon Bay FFA members for hosting a great contest here at the school on Wednesday.  A Big Congratulation to the Intermediate team who placed first, and to the officer and novice teams who placed second.  Great Job!

Hey Cougars! There was no ASC meeting this week due to the Homecoming soccer tournament and there will not be a meeting next Wednesday either due to the giant Relay Schedule, so here's what's happening:

Chris attended a School Board meeting last week and reports that all district sites had an API rise except the Half Moon Bay High School so there was a major focus on education!  Also a parcel tax seems likely.  Club Jam was last week and members from several clubs represented themselves with food and sign-up sheets, overall it was a huge success! For those of you that do not know there is both a leadership face book and MySpace that is continually updated, so check it out!  The senior class will be running the HMBHS parking during pumpkin feast.   Anyone who is interested in taking the SATs or ACTs this year the deadlines are approaching so check out Collegeboard.com and actstudent.org and sign up! ASC Executive board summary:

At this week's meeting we discussed Red Ribbon Week, October 26th to the 30th, which is a week for alcohol and drug awareness. There are also two fundraisers coming up. On Saturday, it is Movie Night at the High School in the quad. They will be showing Wall-E from 7-9 and Disturbia from 9-11. Tickets are $2 for students and $5 for everyone else. It is outdoors so dress warm and bring seating! There will also be food sold at intermissions. All proceeds will go to Cabrillo Unified School District. Another fundraiser that is coming up is the Benefit Concert at 7th St. Montara. It on October 16th from 9-11:30. All proceeds will be going to the Seth Koller Foundation. Also just a reminder that Homecoming Soccer Tournaments are from Wednesday to Friday of next week! Homecoming is just around the corner, good luck!

Volleyball

If you missed the excitement on Tuesday, the f/s volleyball team battled with SSF for sole possession of 2nd place. . .and the Cougars ended up on top after a 3 game duel! The Varsity volleyball team followed that up with an exciting come back win over SSF in a close 5 games, where Kelsey Moore again recorded blocks in the double digits! Lindsay Avila hammered out 10 kills and Miranda Reimche followed closely with 9!  Today the teams finish out the first round of league play at Terra Nova.  Please excuse the f/s volleyball team at 2pm and the varsity at 2:45pm.

Community Service Opportunity

Volunteers needed! Hatch parents are staffing a Healthy Snacks Food Booth during Pumpkin Festival weekend and they need volunteers to help. Duties include order taking, food prep and stocking. Shifts on both days are 8:30-11:30. 11:30-2:30 and 2:30-5:30. Please contact Corrine Bucher (corrine@corrinebucher.com) for details and to sign up.

Congratulations to the Half Moon Bay High School students who participated in the Special Olympics Regional Soccer Tournament on October 7, 2009 at South San Francisco High School.  We placed 1st in our division and tied for first in the overall competition.  Make sure to stop by P-1 and congratulate our amazing athletes!!!

Both volleyball teams pulled out nail biters at Capuchino on Thursday! F/S won it in 3 games and varsity prevailed in 5 games, with the 4th game ending at 32-30 Cougars! How'd they do it? Alyssa Bretz pounded 13 kills into the floor and Kelsey Moore stopped the Mustangs with 10 blocks! Our setters, Jessica Lehane and Haley Nazar, each ended the match with 20 assists a piece! Wanna see Alyssa bounce a spike off her opponent's head (because she did against El Camino!)? Come by the gym today afterschool to support the Cougars as they take on SSF.  Please excuse f/s at 2:20pm.

Congratulations to the HMBHS Surf Team for an outstanding job at their first contest of the year! Over 40 people were there from HMB to cheer for our team!

Here are the results!

• ·       In the team vs. team contest, we beat Harbor High School 59-55.
• ·       Michael Joshua came in 2nd place overall in Men's Longboard!
• ·       Skylar Banner came in 4th place overall in Men's Shortboard!
• ·       Our newly adopted cougar, Hannah Tonnesson (who is home-schooled but allowed to surf for our team) came in 4th for Women's shortboard.

Also, Kaitlyn Manishin (who graduated last year and surfed for our team) is now an assistant coach! Congrats to her for giving back to the cougar community!

On Saturday the Cougar Band took IST place in its division at the Newark Days Celebration parade.  Along with the band winning, the I.D. Unit of Hannah Murray and Lexi Viernes took a IST place and drum major Warren Jolley came in 3rd in the Mace division.

As the only nationally recognized business leadership program available to high school students, having FBLA membership on your college transcript can make a huge difference. The PSAT will be given here on Wednesday, October 14th.  It is a test aimed primarily at juniors, and you can sign up for it here at school.  The test gives you rather a preview of the SAT Reasoning Test, which is required for college admission.  It also puts you in the running for National Merit Scholarships, and it could put you on the radar of some colleges for purposes of admission. The fee is $13.00 in cash or check made out to Half Moon Bay High School.  See Mr Church before October 8th to sign up and receive a Student Guide with sample questions.

Viva la Raza!

Today marks the 8th anniversary of The September 11 attacks.  On the morning of 9/11, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners crashing two into the World Trade Center and one at the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania when passengers tried to retake control of the plane. Today is a national day of mourning, but it also is a National Day of Service.  You can help keep the memories of  9/11 victims alive by volunteering today.
