  1. Reading Aloud to Children. Teachers read aloud to the class and in small groups. Our carefully selected collection of children's literature includes a variety of genre, reading levels and reflects our diverse society. Specific texts are reread many times for student reading development.

  2. Shared Reading. Using extra large books, students and teachers read together. Teachers track words on a page using pointers as students follow along.

  3. Guided Reading. Teachers work with students in small group settings, providing individualized instruction to 4-5 students as they read together and independently.

  4. Independent Reading. Students practice reading on their own and in partners. Students are matched to books at their current reading level.

  5. Shared Writing. Teachers and students work together to compose messages and stories. Teachers support students in writing by acting as scribes as they create messages and stories together.

  6. Interactive Writing. Teachers and students work together to compose messages and stories. Teachers use a "shared pen" technique, which involves teachers and students in writing.

  7. Guided Writing and Writer's Workshop. Teachers guide students and instruct them in a variety of writing styles. Students learn to label words, group and list words, as well as write simple step instructions. Students learn to write stories, which describe things they do, people they know and their interests.

  8. Independent Writing. Students practice writing on their own in a variety of ways.
