FACT SHEET For Immediate Release: February 2010

CUSD Fact Sheet On Emergency Preparedness

The Cabrillo Unified School District is committed to ensuring that students, employees, and visitors interact on campuses and work sites that are welcoming, safe, and secure. A key component of this goal is a comprehensive plan for safety that is developed and implemented at the District level as well as at every school and work site. These Emergency Action Guides are reviewed and updated annually. Visit the District website at www.cabrillo.k12.ca.us to review the current Guide.

What emergency procedures are presently in place?

  • In the event of an emergency: The establishment of the CUSD Emergency Operations Center and the implementation of an established emergency telephone tree communication system.
  • The establishment of a Standard Emergency Management System (SEMS) which includes well defined emergency management and response goals.
  • The development of The Cabrillo School Site Emergency Action Guide. This action guide is up-dated and reviewed with the appropriate personal every year. Examples of topics included in the guide are: Acts of Violence, Fire, Earthquake, Flood, etc.
  • Established protocols reviewing all district facilities for physical safety and security concerns.
  • Ongoing training for all school district security staff including noon duty supervisors at the elementary schools and campus supervisors at the middle and high school levels.
  • An effective School Resource Officer (SRO) presence at all District sites.
  • Full compliance with all emergency practice drills as well as District participation in the State of California’s annual Great Shakeout earthquake drill.
  • A strong ongoing working relationship with the Half Moon Bay Emergency Operations Center, the local Half Moon Bay Police Department and the San Mateo County Sheriff Department.

What additional procedures or plans are being considered?

  • An emergency shortwave radio system that will network all school and work sites in the event of a power outage (to be implemented later this year).
  • Additional work with local law enforcement agencies to better prepare district sites for potential “lockdown” situations.
  • Greater use of technology to enhance campus security and improve school-to-home communications in emergency situations.
