About Cabrillo Unified School District |
Cabrillo Unified School District, located just south of San Franciso on the beautiful Pacific coast, was established on July 1, 1965 and encompasses an area of approximately 135 square miles. The district currently operates four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one high school, a continuation school, and an adult education program. |
The District provides education for approximately 3,400 students. Students come to school with a variety of ethnic backgrounds, languages, learning abilities, and individual needs. Fifty-four (54%) percent of the population served are minority students, primarily Hispanic. Special Education and related services are provided for 400 students. In addition, approximately 24% of students receive English as a Second Language or Bilingual Spanish Immersion instruction. Students live in families representing a wide range of socio-economic groups. In 2008-09 33% of students were eligible for Free or Reduced meals. |
Class Size Reduction |
The District has reduced all Kindergarten through third grade classes to a maximum of 24 students. |
Every Child a Reader and Writer (ECRW ) Grades K-5 |
In the spring of 2000, the Noyce Foundation invited schools throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara County to apply to be part of the Every Child a Reader and Writer (ECRW) initiative. Hatch Elementary School, along with four other schools in the two counties, was selected to participate as an exemplar school in the implementation of a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction with focus on writing as a means of improving literacy. In the subsequent years implementation extended to Farallone View, Kings Mountain and El Granada elementary schools. During the 2004-05 school year, reading was added as an area of focus as part of the initiative. Currently, this initiative is in practice in all K-5 classrooms in the district. |

Gifted and Talented Education |
GATE serves gifted students throughout the district in grades 4-12. Students are selected for the program on the basis of assessments in the areas of creativity and cognitive ability. |
Outdoor Education |
Each fall sixth graders have the opportunity for a week-long outdoor camping education experience at Jones Gulch in La Honda. Ecology study is the focus of the experience. For more information visit www.smcoe.k12.ca.us/outdoored |
Spanish Immersion |
Spanish Immersion classes are comprised of 50% English speakers and 50% Spanish speakers with Spanish as the target language. There is a strong multicultural focus in this program. At the first grade level, 80% of the instruction is in Spanish. Technology |
As CUSD continues to implement technology as an integral part of the learning environment at all grade levels, efforts are focused to: increase student access to computers and other educational technology, develop the expertise of staff, define and build curriculum guidelines and exemplary activities and provide technical support at each site. |
Migrant Education |
Migrant Education is a federally funded program designed to meet the unique educational needs of migrant students by providing these services: preschool, part-time teachers, teaching assistants, summer school, medical and dental support, counseling, and parent involvement. |
| The HEAL Project |
| A unique, hands on, award-winning program that instills healthy lifestyle habits in elementary school children while inspiring environmental and agricultural awareness through a comprehensive, interactive curriculum. | High School Honors & Advanced Placement Program |
| Half Moon Bay High School offers honors and advanced placement (AP) courses in English, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign languages, and art. This AP program challenges students academically and prepares them to take AP tests that allow them to earn college credits while in high school. | Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) |
| TUPE is designed to reduce the tobacco use of youth by helping them to make healthful tobacco-related decisions through tobacco-specific educational instruction and activities that build knowledge as well as social skill. There are several school wide events held for the general student population and specific group sessions held for intervention and cessation purposes. Pilarcitos High School |
Pilarcitos provides an alternative high school setting for 10th - 12th grade students. Students work individually to complete GED requirements. |
Home Independent Study Program |
Home Independent Study is the alternative instructional program for grades 1 - 12. It is designed to serve those parents who are teaching their children at home. Parents provide direction and monitor student progress. Their instructional strategies are responsive to the individual learning needs of their children. A credentialed teacher advises parents and provides appropriate educational materials. |
Independent Study |
Independent Study is a positive and productive alternative to continue or complete a high school education. Independent Study allows students to pursue their educational opportunities outside the classroom, yet within the framework of the educational requirements of the Cabrillo Unified School District. The nature of the program gives students the opportunity to individualize instruction and the freedom to utilize various community resources. The student assumes the responsibility to complete an individual education contract. |
Adult Education |
The Cabrillo Adult Education Program provides instruction in literacy and basic skills in English as a second language, civics, GED preparation, business education, health, and home-making. Special instruction for senior citizens and handicapped adults is also available. |
In addition to these classes, which are supported by state funds, the school district offers a community service program which is self-supporting. Fee-supported programs in arts and crafts, body conditioning, computers, foreign languages, music, and self improvement are offered in response to community request and support. |
Admission to the Adult Education Program is open to adults and high school students who are 14 years of age or older. |
